APC first-term govs back Tinubu’s economic reforms, express concern over insecurity

Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, for their first term have backed the economic reforms of President Bola Tinubu while expressing concern over the country’s security challenges.

The position was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the APC first-term governors’ meeting held on Tuesday in Kebbi State.

The communiqué was presented by the Governor of Kebbi State, Nasir Idris, on behalf of the governors.

The governors acknowledged the economic challenges facing Nigerians but said they believed the ongoing reforms were necessary to address the country’s fiscal, security and development challenges.

They said the reforms were aimed at stabilising the economy, restoring public finances, attracting investment, improving productivity and laying the foundation for long-term economic growth.

The governors also called on Nigerians to remain united and support the implementation of the reforms while urging governments at all levels to strengthen relief measures and social protection programmes for vulnerable citizens.

On security, they expressed concern over persistent insecurity, including terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, attacks on schools and other violent crimes across parts of the country.

They pledged to strengthen collaboration with the Federal Government, security agencies, traditional institutions and local communities to improve security and protect lives and property.

The governors also condemned the abduction of children, attacks on schools and the killing of innocent citizens, calling for intensified efforts to rescue victims and prosecute those responsible.

The communiqué further expressed concern over reported attacks and killings involving Nigerians and other African nationals in South Africa, condemning xenophobia and urging the South African authorities to investigate the incidents and ensure the protection of foreign nationals.

Gagdi Mourns Former Plateau Speaker Peter Azi, Describes Him as a Man of Humility and Kindness

Member of the House of Representatives representing Pankshin/Kanke/Kanam Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Yusuf Adamu Gagdi, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Peter Ajang Azi.

Azi reportedly passed away on Thursday, August 13, 2026.

In a tribute issued following his death, Gagdi described the late former Speaker as his “brother, colleague and friend,” saying his death was a painful loss to his immediate family, Plateau State, the legislative community, particularly members of the 8th Assembly, and everyone who knew him.

Gagdi, who served alongside Azi in the 8th Plateau State House of Assembly as Deputy Speaker, said their time together in the legislature remained a memorable chapter of his public service.

According to him, Azi demonstrated that effective leadership did not have to be loud, noting that he carried himself with “remarkable simplicity, humility and dignity.”

“Azi was a man of kindness, honesty and sincerity of purpose. He had a gentle disposition and a way of making people feel valued,” Gagdi said.

The federal lawmaker also recalled the personal bond he shared with the former Speaker, particularly the familiar moments when he would jokingly tell him, “Take this and take that,” describing the expression as a reflection of the friendship, trust and camaraderie between them.

Gagdi said Azi’s contributions to Plateau State and its democratic development would not be forgotten, stressing that his life of service, humility and commitment to his people had left behind a lasting legacy.

He extended his condolences to Azi’s wife, children, siblings, relatives, friends and other members of the family, as well as the people of Pankshin/Kanke/Kanam Federal Constituency.

Gagdi prayed that Almighty God would comfort the bereaved family and grant them the strength to bear the loss.

“May God grant Peter Ajang Azi eternal rest, receive him into His everlasting Kingdom, and grant the family the strength and fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.”

He concluded by bidding his former colleague and friend farewell, saying: “Rest well, my brother Peter. Your journey on earth is over, but your memories, your kindness and your service will remain with us.”

Cameroon Whips Malawi to Win Historic WAFCON Title

Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses have won their first-ever Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title after thrashing Malawi 3-0 in the final at the Prince Moulay Al Hassan Stadium in Rabat, Morocco, on Sunday.

Cameroon produced a dominant performance from the opening whistle, racing into a commanding 3-0 lead before half-time to put the Scorchers under enormous pressure.

Marie Gisèle Ngah Manga was the star of the final, scoring twice as Cameroon took control of the contest. Naomi Ndjoah Eto also found the net as the Indomitable Lionesses completed a remarkable first-half display.

The triumph marks a historic breakthrough for Cameroon, who had previously reached three WAFCON finals but lost all three — in 2004, 2014 and 2016.

Remarkably, the Central Africans had failed to score in any of those three previous finals, making Sunday’s four-goal victory even more significant.

The title also makes Cameroon only the fourth nation to win the WAFCON, joining Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea and South Africa in the exclusive group of champions.

For Malawi, the defeat brought an end to one of the tournament’s greatest fairytale runs.

The Scorchers reached the final on their debut appearance at the competition, inspired by the prolific Chawinga sisters.

Despite missing out on the trophy, Malawi’s historic campaign earned them a place in the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup alongside champions Cameroon.

The victory establishes Cameroon as the latest force in African women’s football and gives the Indomitable Lionesses their maiden continental crown after years of near misses.
