Troops Reject ₦13.7m Bribe, Arrest Terror Suspects During Plateau Operation — Defence Headquarters

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has revealed that troops of Operation Safe Haven turned down a ₦13.7 million bribe offered by suspected terrorists during a military operation in Plateau State.

Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Markus Kangye, disclosed this on Thursday, July 17, during a press briefing in Abuja, while giving an update on military operations conducted across the country from July 9 to 16, 2025.

“On July 9, 2025, our gallant troops intercepted a vehicle riddled with bullet holes along the Jos–Sanga Road. The suspects attempted to induce the troops with monetary gratification, which was declined. Troops arrested two suspects and recovered weapons, ammunition, a vehicle, and the sum of ₦13,742,000.00 from them,” he stated.

Kangye added that investigation into the case is ongoing, while the recovered items remain in military custody.

He further noted that troops carried out a series of offensive operations and responded to distress calls across several local government areas in Plateau and Kaduna States.

“Within the period under review, troops of Operation Safe Haven conducted offensive operations and responded to distress calls on terrorist activities in Bassa, Barkin Ladi, South Wase, Riyom, and Jos East LGAs of Plateau State, as well as Kaura and Sanga LGAs in Kaduna State,” Kangye explained.

During the operations, the troops reportedly engaged armed extremists, killing some, arresting 12 suspects, and rescuing three kidnapped victims.

In addition, routine patrols led to the arrest of seven suspected militias and criminals in Barkin Ladi and Jos South LGAs of Plateau, as well as Wamba in Nasarawa State and Sanga in Kaduna State.

Recovered items from the various operations included more weapons, ammunition, motorcycles, illicit drugs, and vehicles, Kangye added.
