A heavy rainstorm struck the Shimankar District in Shendam Local Government Area of Plateau State on Sunday, leaving widespread destruction in its path.
Eyewitnesses reported that at least 50 structures—including homes, schools, and places of worship—were damaged in the Menkaat community. Roofs were blown off, and several buildings collapsed under the force of the storm.
Lawrence Longwalk, a resident of the community, confirmed the incident in a telephone interview with PUNCH in Jos.
“We’ve been hit seriously by this rainstorm. At least 50 houses have been affected,” he said. “Two primary schools and a worship centre in Shimankar were completely blown down. From the level of damage, the people need urgent help.”
The storm, which occurred early Sunday morning, has left many residents in urgent need of relief materials and shelter.
The incident underscores the vulnerability of communities in Plateau State to extreme weather, especially during the rainy season. The state’s mountainous terrain and high altitude make it prone to weather-related disasters.
Efforts to reach the Executive Secretary of the Plateau State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Sunday Abdu, were unsuccessful. However, a staff member who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed that the agency is aware of the situation and is planning to assess the damage and provide assistance.
