Plateau Local Government Chairman offers bursary awards to 300 students

Augustine Bako, the Chairman of Mikang Local Government Area of Plateau, has offered bursary awards to 300 indigenes studying in tertiary institutions in the state.

Bako, at the disbursement of the funds Monday in Jos, the State capital said the initiative was to support the students to successfully complete their educational pursuits.

Each beneficiary received N20,000.

Bako said he experimented with the scheme on the assumption of office in October 2021, with 100 students, adding that the beneficiaries were “randomly selected” from across the four districts of the area.

“In January 2022, I continued with the scheme by starting with the Plateau State University Bokkos. And in March, students of FCE Pankshin were also successfully screened and paid.

“Those of Federal Polytechnic Bauchi and College of Agriculture Garkawa took their turns in June the same year. In the first year of my administration, over 500 students of Mikang origin benefited from the scheme.

“Today’s batch is for students of the University of Jos, Plateau State Polytechnic, Barkin-Ladi and Veterinary Research Institute, Vom with 300 hundred beneficiaries,” Bako said.

The council boss said that the scheme was for all students of Mikang origin, not minding their political, religious, and ethnic affiliations.

He commended the screening committee for doing a thorough job that produced the beneficiaries.

The Majority Leader, of Plateau State House of Assembly, Mr. Daniel Nanlong, lauded Bako for coming to the aid of the students.

Nanlong, who represents Mikang State Constituency, urged the students to make judicious use of the funds.

The Chairman of the scheme, Joseph Makum, congratulated them and also advised them to use the golden opportunity to develop themselves.

The President, the Mikang Students Association, Jessica Dole, who spoke on behalf of the beneficiaries, thanked the council chairman for the kind gesture.

“It is not a right but a privilege that we will not forget in a hurry. We promise to make you proud,” Dole said.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory FCT, Nyesom Wike, says Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has corrected his mistakes, stressing that he has no other option than to return to the political family that produced him.

Wike, who made this assertion on Tuesday after inspecting some ongoing road projects across the FCT, stated that Fubara did not commit any crime by reconciling with his political camp.

The minister dismissed suggestions that Fubara’s return amounted to forgiveness after years of political disagreement.

“He has no option but to return to the political family that made him. I don’t know what you mean by sin. In politics, there is no sin. If someone realises they made a mistake and decides to correct it, there is nothing wrong with that.

“Politics is not a sin. What matters is recognising that you were on the wrong path and making the right decision,” he said.

Wike recalled that he had predicted the reconciliation well before Fubara made it public, adding that his public declaration of reconciliation would strengthen efforts to mobilise support for President Bola Tinubu’s second-term bid ahead of the 2027 general election.

Former Super Eagles striker Peter Ijeh believes the Super Falcons have what it takes to retain their WAFCON title despite facing their toughest challenge yet from Africa’s emerging women’s football powers.

Former Super Eagles forward Peter Ijeh has backed the Super Falcons to successfully defend their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title, although he believes the 2026 edition will be one of the toughest in the competition’s history.

Nigeria heads into the tournament in Morocco as the defending champions and record 10-time African champions, with the added objective of securing qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Speaking ahead of the competition, Ijeh acknowledged that the Super Falcons remain Africa’s benchmark but warned that the gap between Nigeria and the rest of the continent continues to narrow.

“I believe Nigeria can win an 11th WAFCON title. It’s mission possible, but it won’t be easy because every team now wants to beat the defending champions,” Ijeh said.

The former Nigeria international noted that the rapid development of women’s football across Africa has made the continental championship far more competitive than in previous years.

“This tournament will be more difficult than what we’ve seen before. Countries have invested heavily in women’s football, and everyone wants to dethrone Nigeria,” he added.

Despite the growing challenge posed by teams such as hosts Morocco, South Africa, Zambia and Ghana, Ijeh believes the Super Falcons possess the experience, quality and winning mentality required to remain at the summit of African women’s football.

Nigeria has won more WAFCON titles than any other nation and enters the tournament with a squad blending experienced internationals and exciting young talents capable of extending the country’s dominance on the continent.

Beyond retaining the continental crown, the Super Falcons are also targeting qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, making a strong start to the tournament crucial.

Ijeh believes that if the Super Falcons maintain their focus and handle the pressure that comes with being Africa’s most successful women’s national team, they have every chance of lifting a record-extending 11th WAFCON title in Morocco.
