NPFL Super 6 Pre-Season Championship: Nigeria’s Continental Clubs Storm Jos for One-Week Football Fiesta

Jos, Plateau State, is set to become the centre of Nigerian club football as some of the country’s leading teams converge in the city for the 2026 NPFL Super 6 Pre-Season Championship, a one-week tournament designed to prepare Nigeria’s continental representatives for the challenges ahead.

The championship, which kicks off on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, will bring together six prominent clubs, including four teams representing Nigeria in next season’s CAF inter-club competitions. The participating teams are expected to arrive in Jos on Monday, August 17, ahead of the tournament.

Among the clubs heading to the Plateau State capital are Rangers International FC of Enugu and Rivers United FC of Port Harcourt, Nigeria’s representatives in the CAF Champions League, alongside Shooting Stars Sports Club of Ibadan and El-Kanemi Warriors FC of Maiduguri, who will represent the country in the CAF Confederation Cup.

The two remaining slots will be occupied by the host state’s football giants, Plateau United FC and Mighty Jets FC, giving football fans in Jos the opportunity to watch some of the country’s top clubs compete in a high-quality pre-season tournament.

Preparing Nigeria’s Clubs for Continental Challenges

The championship is primarily aimed at ensuring that Nigeria’s representatives in continental competitions are adequately prepared for the demanding fixtures ahead. With Nigerian clubs seeking to make a stronger impression on the continental stage, the Jos tournament is expected to provide the participating teams with valuable competitive action, tactical testing and an opportunity to assess their squads ahead of the new season.

Beyond the continental representatives, the tournament will also provide Plateau United and Mighty Jets with an important platform to sharpen their squads and prepare for their own ambitions on the domestic and continental fronts.

The organisers believe the championship will help improve the competitiveness of Nigerian clubs while contributing to the broader development and promotion of football in the country.

Plateau Reaffirms Its Position as Football Hub

Speaking on the tournament, the Chairman of the Plateau State Football Association, Hon. (Dr.) Prince Suleiman Yahaya Kwande, expressed appreciation to the Plateau State Government for its continued support for sports development in the state.

“I must once again thank the Executive Governor of Plateau State, His Excellency, Barrister Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, for giving sports, especially our football, an enabling and conducive environment to thrive with his unwavering support. We can’t thank him enough.”

Kwande noted that hosting the championship further demonstrates Plateau State’s growing reputation as one of Nigeria’s important football destinations.

“The hosting of the NPFL Super 6 in Jos further reinforces Plateau State’s growing reputation as a major football hub and destination for sporting excellence in Nigeria.”

Football Fans Invited to Jos

The Plateau State Football Association chairman also called on football lovers and residents of the state to take advantage of the championship and come out to support the participating clubs.

“We therefore warmly invite football lovers, supporters’ groups, youth organizations, sports enthusiasts, and the people of Plateau State to come out in large numbers to support the participating clubs and experience the excitement, competitiveness, and quality of Nigeria’s premier professional football.”

With six clubs bringing together a mixture of experience, ambition and continental aspirations, the tournament is expected to offer football enthusiasts in Jos a week of exciting encounters and quality football.

The 2026 NPFL Super 6 Pre-Season Championship is organised by the Plateau State Football Association (PFA) in conjunction with the Plateau State Ministry of Youth and Sports Development.

As the participating clubs arrive in Jos on August 17, attention will turn to the opening fixtures on Tuesday, August 18, as the Plateau State capital prepares to host what promises to be a significant pre-season football spectacle.

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen produced a mixed night for Galatasaray on Friday, scoring against İstanbul Başakşehir before being forced off with an injury that could raise concerns over his availability for Nigeria’s upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Osimhen opened the scoring in the 17th minute with a stunning effort to put Galatasaray ahead.

However, his night was cut short after he appeared to suffer a problem following a challenge with Christopher Operi in the 23rd minute. The Nigerian striker continued briefly but later felt the problem again after making a run behind the defence and signalled that he could not continue.

Osimhen was eventually substituted in the 33rd minute, with Barış Alper Yılmaz coming on as his replacement.

Initial reports describe the problem as a suspected muscle/groin injury, but there is currently no confirmed diagnosis or recovery timeline. Osimhen himself reportedly admitted after the incident that he did not yet know whether the injury was serious.

The timing could be significant for Nigeria.

The Super Eagles are scheduled to begin their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign against Madagascar on September 23, before travelling to face Guinea-Bissau on September 27.

That leaves Nigeria with just under three weeks before the Madagascar encounter, meaning Osimhen could still have time to recover if the injury proves minor. However, a significant muscle strain or tear could put his participation in doubt.

For now, Osimhen has not been ruled out of the Super Eagles’ upcoming matches, and his availability will depend on further medical examinations and his recovery over the coming days.

The immediate concern for Nigeria will therefore be the results of those assessments.

He scored a spectacular goal, but the biggest question tonight is whether Osimhen will be fit when Nigeria need him most.

AI compute provider Nscale is looking for $3.5B in pre-IPO financing

Nscale, a British AI infrastructure company founded just two years ago, has said it may go public as early as later this month. Ahead of that expected IPO, the company is reportedly in talks to raise an additional $3.5 billion.

Bloomberg reported Friday that the company is looking to sell $1.5 billion in convertible notes — a type of loan that can later convert into company stock — to a group of investors, while also seeking an additional $2 billion in financing from Nvidia.

Nvidia also participated in the firm’s Series B funding round in March, a $1.1 billion raise led by investment fund Aker. Nscale hailed its round as “the largest Series B in European history.” The company’s Series A round, in December of 2024, raised $155 million.

TechCrunch reached out to Nscale and Nvidia for comment.

AI infrastructure startups have seen immense growth amid the current era of AI enthusiasm, wherein compute has become a competitive currency.

Nscale recently signed a large deal with Anthropic worth approximately $45 billion. Earlier this week, reports emerged that Nscale had been telling potential investors that it has approximately $103 billion in revenue following the deal. That figure isn’t current sales; it’s a projection based on signed customer leases, according to The Information.
