Plateau State, [Date] – Peace and Good Governance Advocates (PEGGA), a prominent good governance group, has strongly criticized the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Plateau State for its conduct at the Plateau State Governorship Election Tribunal hearing on Monday, June 26, 2023.

In a statement issued by PEGGA’s coordinator, Manny Imman, the group commended Governor Caleb Mutfwang for demonstrating restraint and dignity in the face of an assault by APC thugs as he exited the tribunal hearing.

The group expressed deep concern over the incident, stating, “What transpired outside the tribunal hearing on Monday was shocking to the majority of democracy stakeholders in Plateau and served as a reminder of the violence that the APC has inflicted upon the people of Plateau in the past year.”

PEGGA further condemned the APC for allegedly hiring thugs to assault Governor Caleb Muftwang and subject him to various forms of indignities as he left the tribunal hall.

However, the group commended Governor Mutfwang for his dignified response, noting, “We applaud the governor for his composure, demonstrating the virtues of the Christ that he preaches by turning the other cheek in the face of such assault.”

Acknowledging that another individual, including APC leader Simon Lalong, may not have tolerated such an assault without a violent response from their security details, PEGGA emphasized the governor’s exemplary behavior.

The group urged the police and other security agencies to take necessary measures to curb the activities of APC thugs in the future. They stated, “Given that the police have video evidence of those responsible for the assault, we call on the security agencies to take appropriate action against them to prevent a recurrence of such violence.”

PEGGA also expressed concerns about potential clashes if the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) mobilizes its own supporters to counter the APC thugs. Therefore, they urged the security agencies to apprehend those responsible for the violence to maintain peace and order.

The incident at the Plateau State Governorship Election Tribunal hearing has raised serious questions about the conduct of the APC and the need for effective security measures to ensure a peaceful political environment in Plateau State.

Former Nigeria international Gbenga Okunowo has admitted that the Super Eagles’ absence from the FIFA World Cup continues to leave a huge void, insisting football fans around the world still expect Nigeria to be part of the global showpiece.

The former Barcelona defender described Nigeria’s failure to qualify for back-to-back World Cups as a major setback for the country’s football.

“The world still expects to see Nigeria at the World Cup,” Okunowo said.

The ex-Super Eagles star believes missing consecutive editions of football’s biggest tournament has done more than damage Nigeria’s reputation.

According to him, it has also affected the development of young players and reduced opportunities for Nigerian footballers to attract international attention.

“When Nigeria is not at the World Cup, our young players lose a massive platform to showcase themselves,” he added.

Okunowo stressed that the World Cup remains the biggest shop window in world football, with clubs and scouts closely monitoring emerging talents throughout the competition.

He warned that Nigeria’s continued absence could also affect the market value of players hoping to secure moves to Europe’s top leagues.

“It also weakens the country’s standing in world football,” he stated.

The former Barcelona full-back urged Nigerian football stakeholders to ensure the mistakes that led to consecutive World Cup qualification failures are not repeated.

Nigeria, three-time African champions, will now shift their focus towards qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations and beginning preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, with many hoping the Super Eagles can return to football’s biggest stage after missing the last two editions.
