Governor Mutfwang Unveils Jos Family Christmas Festival, Aiming to Make Plateau Nigeria’s Top Holiday Destination

Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has expressed confidence that Plateau can become Nigeria’s leading Christmas destination with the introduction of the Jos Family Christmas Festival. The festival, themed “A Beautiful Experience,” will take place from December 21 to December 27, 2024, offering a weeklong celebration filled with festive activities.

Speaking during the festival’s unveiling on Monday, Governor Mutfwang highlighted the potential of the event to attract tourists from across Nigeria and beyond, turning Plateau into a global Christmas hotspot. “This festival promises to be an extraordinary event, captivating both local residents and visitors. It reflects the true meaning of Christmas—the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ—and is a time to embrace love, peace, and goodwill,” the governor said.

The event will transform Jos into a vibrant Christmas haven, adorned with twinkling lights, carols, and festive decorations. Governor Mutfwang also emphasized that the festival is an opportunity for Plateau to showcase its culture and hospitality, bringing together communities and visitors to celebrate the season in harmony.

Chuwang Pwajok, General Manager of the Plateau State Tourism Corporation, explained that the festival is part of a larger strategy to boost tourism by creating immersive experiences. “We want visitors to fully experience Plateau’s rich culture, people, and environment, especially during the Christmas season when people travel in large numbers,” Pwajok said.

He added that the festival will support local businesses, especially in the hospitality sector, and provide economic opportunities for small vendors. Partnerships with private sector event planners and organizations will further enhance the visitor experience.

Among the exciting activities lined up for the festival, Sir Rume Ogane, CEO of Ecosystem Africa, announced daily raffle draws, comedy shows, live music, games, and a funfair. The event will also feature the Jos International Film Festival, Cultural Dance Float, Bonfire Night, and a Runway Fashion Show.

In response to safety concerns, Musa Ashoms, Plateau’s Commissioner for Information and Communication, assured the public that adequate security measures, including drone surveillance and collaboration with Operation Safe Haven, would be in place. “Plateau is peaceful, safe, and ready to offer a fantastic Christmas experience,” Ashoms affirmed.

Adding to the excitement, Nigerian rapper M.I. Abaga, serving as Plateau’s Honorary Special Adviser on Entertainment and Creativity, praised the festival’s potential to promote Plateau’s arts and culture on the global stage, while fostering economic growth within the community.

The Jos Family Christmas Festival is set to become a key part of Plateau’s identity as the “Home of Peace and Tourism,” attracting visitors for a unique and joyful holiday experience.
