Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring justice for the victims of a tragic mob attack that claimed the lives of over 20 wedding guests in Mangun District of Mangu Local Government Area last month.
The victims, who were en route to a wedding ceremony in Quan’pan Local Government Area, were travelling from Zaria, Kaduna State, when they reportedly lost their way and entered Mangun. Mistaken for terrorists, they were attacked by a mob, resulting in the deaths of about 22 persons and injuries to 11 others.
Speaking in an interview with the BBC Hausa Service on Saturday, Governor Mutfwang expressed deep sorrow over the incident and described it as a consequence of entrenched religious and ethnic divisions in the region. He acknowledged that such conflicts, often targeting innocent travelers, cannot be resolved overnight but affirmed that steps are being taken to prevent future occurrences.
“We are already taking appropriate measures,” the governor said. “So far, 22 suspects are being held in connection with the attack, and we have confirmed that the injured victims have returned safely to Zaria.”
Mutfwang further disclosed that a high-powered delegation led by the Emir of Wase was sent to Zaria to console the Emir and the bereaved families, adding that his administration is in close contact with leaders in Kaduna State to determine the best ways to support the affected families.
“We are working hand in hand with Zaria’s traditional and community leaders to explore meaningful support for those who lost loved ones and for the injured survivors,” he added.
Governor Mutfwang emphasized that justice will be served and that such senseless violence has no place in the state under his leadership.
