Google goes for the glitter with disco-ball icons: ‘Are y’all sure you still want this?’

So bad, it’s good? Google on Friday joined in the disco ball icon fun taking place on home screens everywhere. After Spotify’s temporary new disco ball app icon, released to celebrate the company’s 20th anniversary, drew extensive online backlash (and a bit of praise for those who like a little kitsch!), Google decided to get in on the joke and rolled out a custom set of Android app icons sporting a similar disco ball theme.

On X, Android ecosystem head Sameer Samat posted, “Your wish is our command. Disco icons available on Pixel as of today…Are y’all sure you still want this?”

His post included a screenshot of a Pixel phone fully decked out with sparkly, disco-ball-inspired icons, which looks just as terrible (incredible??) as it sounds.

The new icons are available through Pixel’s relatively new custom icons feature, which allows users to choose from different AI-generated styles for their app icons. Before this, users could only customize their icons by changing their colors to match the phone’s wallpaper and theme.

The custom icons feature rolled out in March’s Pixel Drop — Google’s term for its periodic feature updates to Pixel phones — introducing app icon templates like a hand-drawn “Scribbles” aesthetic, a gold look called “Treasure,” a colorful, painted style dubbed “Easel,” and others.

Earlier this week, Samat had jokingly tweeted, “Should we make this icon pack happen on Android?” alongside a Chrome icon turned into a disco ball.

Silly as it may be, Google actually made it happen.

Many people had complained about the Spotify icon, calling it ugly, prompting the company to remind them it was just a temporary sitch. “Alright, we know glitter is not for everyone,” the streamer wrote.

Google, seemingly, disagrees. As off-brand as its disco-themed icons are, there’s also something whimsical about turning your whole homescreen into a sparkly landscape of little apps. (And, in case you missed it, the Zillennials are really into whimsy right now, The New York Times reports, describing their “playful response to a difficult world.”)

Upon seeing Google’s release, X user and former Pixly co-founder Race Johsnon quipped, “When your home screen gets bottle service.” Said another, “Omg it’s awful. I’ll take it!”

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the massive road construction projects being executed across Nigeria.

Akpabio portrayed the President as “doing miracles,”  while praising the remarkable pace at which the administration is completing and commissioning roads.

He made the remarks on Thursday, July 2, 2026, during the commissioning of the Old Keffi Road in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), stretching from Kado Fish Market to Dei-Dei.

“The performing President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. I have not seen any President in Nigeria who, within his first, second, and third anniversaries, has commissioned the volume of projects this President has commissioned across the country,” Akpabio said.

He continued: “While we were on the road yesterday, we looked at the Gaduwa road which we commissioned; Nasarawa was a day before that.

“When I saw the miracle of touching Satellite Town, people came out just as you see here today — with joy and shouts. They could not believe what they were seeing,” he noted.

Listing several ongoing projects, Akpabio urged Nigerians to make future electoral support conditional on tangible performance and delivered projects.

“While we were there yesterday, another commissioning was going on in Nasarawa State — a major road — and the commencement of construction from Akwanga all the way to Jos in Plateau State. This President is doing miracles!

“So I think in Nigeria, we must now set a new standard for elections: ‘Show me your works and I will vote for you.’

People who are talking have been in government for a very long time — some for over 25 years — yet they cannot boast of anything.

“But in the case of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, start looking at his works from his days as Governor of Lagos until today,” he added.

Sharafadeen Alli on Thursday formally received the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, nomination form as the All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship candidate for the 2027 general election in Oyo State.

At the event, the senator also unveiled Michael Adedeji as his running mate for the election.

Adedeji, 46, is an Economics graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University and hails from Iwo-Ate in Ogo Oluwa Local Government Area of the state.

Speaking during the ceremony, the Oyo State APC Chairman and former deputy governor, Moses Alake Adeyemo, called on party members to remain united and work collectively toward reclaiming power in the 2027 governorship election.

Adeyemo stressed that the APC stood a better chance of advancing the state’s development while in government and appealed to aggrieved members to put aside their differences in the interest of the party.

“By the grace of God, come May 29, 2027, our governor and deputy governor will be Senator Sharafadeen Alli and Adesoji Adedeji. I plead with us in the name of the Lord to come together,” he said.

Presenting the INEC nomination form to Alli, the APC Deputy National Auditor, Gbenga Olayemi, described the governorship candidate as a symbol of the party’s collective aspiration rather than an individual contestant.

“You will recall that I presented the nomination forms to National Assembly candidates on Monday. Senator Alli is not just our governorship candidate; he is our flag bearer. Every APC member in Oyo State is a governorship candidate,” Olayemi stated.

In his acceptance speech, Alli described his emergence as the APC candidate as a shared victory for all members of the party and pledged to govern with fairness, accountability and inclusiveness if elected.

He expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, the APC National Working Committee, party leaders in Oyo State, security agencies and party faithful for their support throughout the primary process.

The senator also acknowledged the contributions of other aspirants and appealed to them and their supporters to rally behind the APC ahead of the governorship poll.

According to him, the mission of reclaiming Oyo State requires unity, sacrifice and collective commitment from all party members.

“Our people are yearning for leadership that listens, unites and understands their pains. They deserve a government that works for everyone, regardless of religion, ethnicity, social class or geopolitical zone,” Alli said.

He outlined plans to prioritise agriculture, youth empowerment, education, healthcare, infrastructure development, environmental protection and inclusive economic growth if elected governor.

Alli further pledged to align his administration with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu through policies anchored on justice, fairness, accountability and service delivery.

“I will remain accessible, accountable and a good listener. I will never take the trust of the people for granted. Let us reject division, embrace unity and work together to restore the true Pacesetter glory of Oyo State,” he added.

In his remarks, Adedeji thanked the APC leadership for the confidence reposed in him and expressed confidence that the party would emerge victorious in the 2027 governorship election.

The event was attended by members of the APC State Working Committee led by Adeyemo, National Assembly and State Assembly candidates, party leaders and stakeholders, including Ayo Adeseun, Hosea Agboola, Femi Lanlehin, Fatai Ibikunle, Timothy Jolaoso and Olayide Abbas, among others.
