CDS Tours Plateau, Pledges New Strategies to Curb Insecurity

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, has reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigerian Armed Forces to ending attacks on communities in Plateau State and other areas under Operation Safe Haven.

During an operational visit to the Headquarters of Operation Safe Haven in Jos on Friday, General Musa announced that the military is re-evaluating its strategies to better address the region’s complex security challenges.

According to a statement issued by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the CDS stressed the need to adapt military tactics to the asymmetric nature of the conflict and called for greater community collaboration in isolating criminal elements.

“We must take decisive actions to halt the cycle of violence affecting Plateau and neighboring states facing similar challenges,” General Musa said.

He urged local leaders to guide their youth in promoting peace and identifying troublemakers within their communities. The CDS also warned that military commanders who fail in their responsibilities would be held accountable, while assuring that the Defence Headquarters would provide improved logistical support to enhance field operations.

In his remarks, the Commander of Operation Safe Haven and General Officer Commanding 3 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Eyitayo Folusho Oyinlola, highlighted the successes recorded so far, despite recent setbacks.

He reiterated the commitment of the command to securing lives and property, adding that collaboration with other security agencies has improved intelligence gathering and response capacity.

“Operation Safe Haven will not relent until the peace process is fully achieved, with tangible results evident across all operational areas,” he said.

As part of his visit, General Musa toured the Nigerian Army Medical Centre at Tigi and Sector 6 in Jebbu Bindi, Riyom LGA. He promised to support the facility to ensure it delivers quality healthcare to both troops and the host community.

At Jebbu Bindi, the CDS addressed troops, urging them to stay vigilant and dedicated to their mission. He also emphasised the importance of fostering strong community relations as a key element in sustaining peace and security.
