2027: Supreme Court Judgment supersedes FHC ruling — SDP to INEC, Gabam

The National Working Committee of the Social Democratic Party, led by Prof. Sodiq Gombe, has made an important clarification regarding a Federal High Court judgment being paraded by its embattled former acting chairman, Shehu Gabam.

In a statement on Friday by the opposition party’s spokesperson, Araba Aiyenigba told the Independent National Electoral Commission that the ground upon which the FHC judgment was based has been set aside by the Supreme Court.

This comes following a highcourt judgment submitted to INEC by Gabam and its legal term laying fresh siege to the party leadership.

However, SDP told INEC that the said judgment has been appealed against by the party, and it is now pending before the Court of Appeal.

“The SDP calls on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to take note that the said judgment has been appealed against by the Social Democratic Party, and it is now pending before the Court of Appeal.

“It is clear that the said plaintiff is not the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party in the Osun State and did not participate in our primary election. Dr Ajala is the SDP governorship candidate.

“With respect to the leadership of the SDP, the Supreme Court has maintained that courts do not have jurisdiction to determine who can be the national chairman, national secretary, or the leadership of a political party.

“Having moved beyond the distraction of Shehu Musa Gabam, the party is focused on strongly building and reinforcing its capacity for victory ahead of the 2027 general elections,” the statement reads.

Recall that Gombe’s name was uploaded on INEC’s portal after Gabam’s name was removed.

However, Gabam renewed his claim to the leadership of SDP with a judgment dated June 24.

Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu has defended his player selection and tactical decisions ahead of Nigeria’s crucial Group C encounter against Zambia at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The ten time African champions are under pressure following their disappointing 3-2 defeat to tournament debutants Malawi in their opening match.

The outcome of that has intensified scrutiny of the coaching crew’s team selection and tactical approach.

Speaking during his pre-match press conference on Friday, Madugu insisted that every selection is based on players’ performances in training, tactical requirements and the specific demands of each opponent.

“We have very versatile players in this team. Every player selected is chosen for a reason,” Madugu said.

“The choices we make are based on what we observe in training, the physical condition of the players and the tactical plan for each game. We take full responsibility for every decision.”

The coach acknowledged the disappointment of the opening defeat but maintained that Nigeria still controls its destiny in the competition.

“We still have our fate in our hands. We have corrected the mistakes from the last game and we are fully focused on the challenge against Zambia,” he added.

Madugu also revealed that the technical crew has worked on tactical adjustments aimed at improving the team’s defensive organisation and attacking efficiency ahead of the must-win fixture.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie and forward Uchenna Kanu expressed confidence that the squad has moved on from the setback against Malawi.

Nnadozie urged Nigerians to continue supporting the team, insisting the players remain united and determined to bounce back, while Kanu said the atmosphere in camp remains positive despite the opening loss.

Nigeria face a formidable Zambia side that began their campaign with an emphatic 6-0 victory over Egypt.

Victory for the Super Falcons would revive their hopes of reaching the knockout stage, while another defeat would leave their qualification chances hanging by a thread.

BY NKECHI NAECHE-ESEZOBOR—Nigeria’s retail insurance giant, Mutual Benefits Assurance Plc has reported 2.57 percent growth in Insurance Revenue to ₦42.25 billion up from ₦41.20 billion in H1 2025.

According to the group’s unaudited financial statements, released on the floor of Nigerian Exchange Plc, Total Assets appreciated by 15.46% to ₦204.00 billion as of June 30, 2026 when compared to ₦176.68 billion at year-end December 2025.

Also, its Shareholders’ Funds grew to ₦72.32 billion as against ₦65.00 billion reported in December 2025, this indicating 11.25% growth

The company’s net income from reinsurance contracts held turned around significantly to ₦3.25 billion, reversing a net expense of ₦3.73 billion recorded in the same period last year.

The company reported a net profit of ₦3.51 billion for H1 2026, down 40.48% from ₦5.90 billion in H1 2025.

The underwriter’s total assets crossed the ₦200 billion mark, driven largely by a 50.10% rise in reinsurance contract assets, which reached ₦22.49 billion (up from ₦14.98 billion in December 2025).

Total liabilities stood at ₦117.98 billion, representing a 10.31% expansion from ₦106.95 billion recorded at the end of fiscal year 2025.
